And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
67-68 at Fremont we watched Don Prudhomme with the Shelby Super Snake spot Pure Hell a couple lights and totally roast him. So much tire smoke that was hard to tell the margin. The next heat was delayed so everyone could see the track.
Rich Guasco. Back then the nitro cars lit up their tires for the entire quarter mile. Back before the days of slipper centrifugal clutches as well. If you have not been to a nitro fest, I would highly recommended Friday qualifying at any NHRA National Event. There are basically about 20 Top Fuelers and 20 Funny Cars trying to make a 16 car show, as well as Pro Stockers. There are 2 qualifing sessions usually between noon and about 6 PM, and entrance into the pits, up close and personal, is a part of admission and not be missed. The violence, speed and mainly the sonic and physical assault on your senses is incomprehensible if you have not seen it before. High level hearing protection a must.
used to be into drag racing back in the late 60-s and early 70's - you are spot on about the 'assault on your senses' - sights, noise (LOTS of noise!), smell (nitro mixed with burnt rubber), and the pressure of exhaust pounding your torso ... great times!

'56 or '57 I watched Cook & Bedwell set the record of 166mph.
