This is fun. A US Geological Survey production that documents the formation and activity of the lava lake on the Big Island

Try to perfect your pronunciation of Halema'uma'u, all you haoles.

Before this most recent eruption, Mrs. CW and I were there, and took the now closed trail around the rim to the overview point that, unknown to us, was just above the point where the vent opened a few years later.  Along the trail, there were frequent little shrines put there by Hawaiians to honor Pele, the goddess of the island.  The smell of sulfur was very strong, and when we got to the overlook, Mrs. CW was totally creeped out, and quickly demanded to leave.  Now, we know why.  The boiling lava was just there, under the surface, ready to erupt.

Had we stayed too long, we might have had a Gollum moment.
