Spearfisherman bitten by Great White off Pebble Beach in California

A man is in stable condition in a local hospital after a great white shark attacked him while he spear fished a few hundred yards off Pebble Beach in California. The shark bit his thigh, causing significant damage.

Grigor Azatian, 25, was fishing with his father on Friday afternoon when the shark attacked. A pair of off duty police officers, fishing nearby, helped the man’s father carry the injured fisherman to shore.

The trio applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg before he was rushed to the hospital. Surgeons successfully closed the wound and Azatian is now recovering.
Years ago a guy I went to school with was mauled by a Great White off Tomales Point while scuba diving.  In the Pacific, we are not the apex predator.

  1. Sharks bite the thighs of divers who spear fish because that's where they put their bleeding catch of speared fish. Otherwise sharks tend to avoid divers.

  2. "In the Pacific, we are not the apex predator."

I would say that we are not the apex predator in ANY ocean we are in, unless we are surrounded by a large machine like a submarine...

A guy recently pulled an 11 foot Tiger Shark out of the surf on the beach here in NC that we swim at - and there are lots of Great Whites around Cape Cod now since the seal population has rebounded so well.
