Kīlauea Volcano's summit lava lake level was in recent days just 69 feet below the vent rim. A long stretch of active spattering was visible along the east lake margin from the rim of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, an area that remains closed to the public due to ongoing hazards.

Years ago my wife and I visited here during our pre children days. There was no lake of fire then, but there was the strong smell of sulfur and numerous little offerings to Pele from the local Hawaiians. It creeped my wife out, and she was quickly ready to leave. She could sense the malevolence from deep underground, using her female sixth sense. Now look! Pele's fires have broken out and she is demanding a sacrifice from her subjects, the citizens of Hawaii. If one is not offered to her satisfaction, then who knows what disaster will befall this fair isle.
