  2. Because of a lack of any other building material, early pioneers lived in dugout homes with sod roofs.

    Being all alone in that environment, with nothing but flat, wind swept prairie in every direction, as far as the eye could see, in total silence, except for the sound of the wind, there were frequent DEADLY problems with severe depression and psychosis.
