And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Geronimo, the later years
He has that same look that Wyatt Earp had. Tough and no nonsense.
You can tell just by his look why he and his boys were such a handful for the army. Imagine if he had had the advantage of numbers and technology, like we did. With the table turned, the Apache would probably have marched on Washington DC!
The Apache were warriors, the army was composed of a mixed bag of soldiers. When they were well led by General Crook, they didn't do too badly -- all things considered. When they were led by General Miles, they did poorly.
Even today, there are few warriors in uniform, but everyone in uniform is a soldier/sailor. Things haven't changed all that much.
Both were men who knew what it was to kill other men who pissed them off.
