Seems she was steaming along, I forget where when a sailor looked over the fantail and saw the expected white wake was gone. It was mud colored. He told a petty officer who called the bridge. Yes, the ship had been aground for who knows how long. All that horsepower kept her sliding over the bottom. Lots of career damage, re-assignments, etc., etc. This was taught in Tactics Class so I think it must be true.

Ship out of New Bedford, the "NILE"was out for an eleven year cruise chasing whales . They hit land once in a while to resupply but still a long time to be away from home. Multi year whale hunts were commonplace. The men were men, cabin boys beware.
If you can find them, show pics of the Corvettes on the flight deck. They used to run charity events (forget what charity for) where Corvette owners would gather in Corpus Cristi and they all got to drive on ship, ride the elevator to the flight deck. They'd park Vettes of all colors and ages on there from bow to stern. Even saw a handful of former Indy pace-cars there once. "Jets and Vettes on the Lex" I think they called it. They don't do it anymore since they can't fix the elevator.
