  2. Maybe a 6 cylinder engine and 3 blade prop? One cylinder of 3 coming up on the compression stroke? And some OCD mechanic positioned the prop on a spline accordingly?

  4. Propeller synchronization on the Boeing 314 Clipper reduced pilot fatigue primarily by eliminating "prop beat"—a low-frequency, pulsating noise and vibration caused when multiple engines run at slightly different RPMs.

    Elimination of Low-Frequency Drone: When unsynchronized, the slight difference in propeller speeds creates a rhythmic "throbbing" or beating sound (similar to a helicopter's blade slap). This low-frequency drone is physically exhausting and mentally irritating over long durations, such as the 10+ hour transoceanic flights flown by BOAC.
    Vibration Reduction: Synchronization ensures all four engines rotate at the exact same speed, smoothing out airframe vibrations. Constant exposure to unbalanced vibration causes physical strain, muscle tension, and headaches, accelerating the onset of fatigue.
    Cognitive Load: The constant auditory distraction of an unsynchronized beat requires pilots to subconsciously filter the noise, increasing mental workload. A smooth, harmonious engine hum allows for better concentration and rest during long cruises.
