And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
My first job after high school was as a cook at the Bob's Big Boy restaurant and drive-in in Glendale, CA. It was #1. I am baffled and sad that the chain mostly closed down in CA. Whenever I'm in the area, I go to the Bob's in Burbank.
Great image! Like you, DJP, I have fond memories of Bob's Big Boy in Glendale... if I recall correctly, it was on Colorado Blvd, the same street made famous by the Little Old Lady from Pasadena. It was a favorite hangout in high school (Hoover High) and after church youth group. Many excellent burgers were consumed there. Good times!
Original in Glendale: three buns, two patties, lettuce, mayonnaise, relish, one slice of cheese. But you could order any variation using any food we had in stock. I could tell stories.
Huh, thought this was a CA/West Coast chain, surprised to see they're Michigan too. Xcept that one lone one in N'Dakota. Unsure if they're better than In&Out; I figure the Cali expats would've brought Bob's eastwards in their Cal-exidous if it was that good.
The ones in Michigan were Elias Bros. Good stuff in its day. California outlets probably didn't have "Boston Coolers" (not named for some city back east)
Growing up in Grand Prairie, Texas... I have fond memories of Kip's Big Boy. First time I'd ever had or even heard of deep fried French toast...from their Sunday buffet...
Hwy 100, Milwaukee, WI - ate there many times, long ago. But, Wendys had an all-you-can-eat Salad Bar, complete with all the Taco fixings, Chili... That was all we newlyweds could afford in 1981, and we still talk about sharing a drink with 2 straws!
In Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, it was Frisch's Big Boy. Chain went downhill in the 90s and finally went TU about 2 years ago. Shame, back in the day they were really good.

My salad dressing of choice is Bob's Big Boy Blue Cheese. Expensive, but yummy.
ReplyDeleteTheir blue cheese dressing was fabulous. We'd get a side of it and dip our french fries in it. Amazing!
