Chief Burning Face - acquired his name during the sand creek massacre. originally known as “Big Wolf,” he was 27 years old when he defended his village from the US army during an attack. Amid the smoke and fire of the massacre, he appeared to be on fire. he miraculously survived, became a chief, and lived to 80 years old.

DeleteFrom my fairly extensive reading about Native American and their culture of endless raiding other tribes, killing, raping, kidnapping, stealing horses and cattle and causing massive death and destruction, it went on for centuries before the European settlers showed up.
And with regard to "defending his village" during the Sand Creek incident... the Indians were caught with their pants down and they put up a paltry fight.
