And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
This movie played early, early one morning on the "Morning Movie" show. Not wanting to wake up my mother, I sat, terrified, watching it. I think I was about 5 years old. Scariest thing I ever saw! This, coupled with snatches of adult talk about WWII, really had me on hyper-alert throughout my childhood.
I was always disappointed that they didn't have them walking on legs like the fighting machines in the book but stop go back then was pretty scratchy. The Tom Cruise effort was pretty good as well and probably closer to the book. The book aliens were just fatties without much in the way of limbs - they had machines for doing everything. The big films seem to generally have similar types of aliens - long arm and legs, claw like fingers and black eyes so less boring.
Love all the Pal movies… great childhood memories.
