And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Charleston: Over the Rooftops in 1870 by John Stobart
If you're visiting, go to the harbor tour boat pier and look at the bronze plaques near the fountain showing how Charleston developed over the centuries. Lots of reclaimed land, as is the case where our condo is on Bee St. Bought an old 1920s map that shows it sits in the middle of a filled in tidal pool.
We had the old seawall running through our front yard, about 100 yards in from the present day Low Battery. You could see the oyster shells mixed in with the cement.
I've been there, lived right down the street for 50yrs. Got too crowded & I escaped.
ReplyDeleteMy hometown. Lived on South Battery, which is to the right of this scene.
ReplyDeleteCharleston - where the Ashley and Cooper meet to form the Atlantic Ocean.
ReplyDeleteThat’s about the time all the Yankees started moving in.
ReplyDeleteReserved a warm place in my heart for Charleston. It's a shame it's overgrown to the point of being near "r'urnt".

ReplyDeleteThat’s St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.
ReplyDeleteI attended there when I was stationed in the navy in Charleston.
