And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
It's a 'new' cartridge created in 1988 for a Beverly Hills millionaire because Holland & Holland wouldn't build him a 600 Nitro Express to take on safari. The old saying is "it kills at one end and maims at the other" to describe such rifles. Al_in_Ottawa
700 nitro ammo is $80-$90 for a box of 50. The $80 box will give you 2000 fps with a 1000gr bullet and the $90 box will give you 2600 fps on a 1000gr bullet. I have a buddy that has a single shot 700 Nitro Express. It has a heavy kick, after one shot I did not want to shoot it again.
Local walmart is now $86.47 for a 20 rbd box of 308, sounds like 700 nitro is cheaper. Of course we have new tariffs up here on ammo because they maje our new carnival clown scared.
Strait walled brass is cheap to make. The 250gr powder charge is 25 cents. The two big cost are the primer and the 1000gr bullet. If I had the dies I could reload this for 80 cents a round. A .308 is 95 cents a round to reload with the cost of a once used case.

I read somewhere in Jeff Coopers commentaries that when they built his custom .460 G&A Magnum rifle they loaded up 3 boxes of ammo. When they retired the rifle after he and his cohorts had used it to take a lot of big dangerous African game such as Cape Buffalo there was still a box and a half of shells left. You don't go plinking with these things.
Dino gun…
ReplyDelete'A Gun for Dinosaur' by L. Sprague de Camp, 1956. The title character was a .600 Nitro Express.
DeleteI'm afraid to ask what those cartridges cost. Five round box - you know the price isn't thrifty.
ReplyDeleteIf you can afford the rifle, you can afford the ammo.
DeleteMichael in Nelson
Elephant gun?
ReplyDeleteIt packs a wallop at both ends so hunt what you wish with it but would likely take a T-Rex down… I mean cavemen did it with spears…
DeleteI notice it's a double barreled rifle. The weight will help a bit.
ReplyDeleteYou'd think one of those artillery rounds (kidding, ok?) should do the job but a quick 2nd shot is advisable.

Ouch!
ReplyDeleteJust a guess... but anyone who would have an expensive rifle engraved with a T Rex has issues of (in)adequacy in the dangling bit.
ReplyDeleteIf all you have is a hammer, every issue looks like a nail.
DeleteMy shoulder and wallet hurts just looking at that, but I shoot a .338 Lapua Magnum, so I'm use to wallet pain.
