And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
One of my favorite lines is that biologist JBS Haldane was asked what he could tell the world about God, should there be one, from his years as biologist.
Haldane said, "he has an inordinate fondness for beetles." Which is true. But when I see a photo like that I say "he has an inordinate fondness for partial differential equations." There isn't a straight line on that globe; no triangles, only the coarsest resemblance to planar geometry. It's all PDEs.
