And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
That price is in 1957 dollars. Today, 68 years later and after the government has worked its magic, that $96 price becomes $1104. Who says there is no such a thing as progress?
had a 357 model with a the 4.75 inch barrel. great shooting pistol ! also had to sell it during my divorce too. just one more reason to hate her still. was butting clays at 25 yards with it right out of the box. it lived in my glove box of my truck, handy as hell for dealing with coyotes.
You'll notice this ad is for the first .44 Mag Blackhawk, not the Super Blackhawk which came along a few years later. The first model had a standard Blackhawk grip frame, not the longer Super grip frame, a fluted cylinder and it didn't have a Dragoon trigger guard, among other refinements.
I've got one too. I love the reverse indexing pawl, that lines the chambers up with the ejector rod without looking. Very cool. I don't know why they don't put it on all new Blackhawks.
I have one in .357 and if I could only keep one gun out of the mumble mumble mumble that I own, that Blackhawk would be the one. It's one of the old original ones that hasn't been modified - 4 clicks to full cock. Gotta keep the hammer down on an empty cylinder. Accurate as hell, can pop beer cans at a hundred yards once you dope the wind.
What you have is referred to as an unconverted three screw. Yeah, that's a keeper. I have one in .45 Colt/.45 ACP. They were only made for wo years. Shooing the .45 ACP is a hoot. Zero recoil.
Yeah, four clicks. The loading gate is that fine purple. 1956, I think. Unmolested, original condition. I can't get with why anyone would send me in to convert to a transfer bar. I know the reason but just go buy a newer one, leave the 3 screw alone.
The above post was me, Rick. I was so busy getting my facts straight I forgot to put my name on it. If you would, let us know what your Blackhawk is, please. You've got me curious.
I have several Rugers - revolvers, pistols and rifles- all are top notch and strong. My favorite is a 3 screw .357 I bought new in 1963. It is good to 150 yards.
$96??? Gimmee 10!!!
ReplyDeleteAt that price, I'll take 25 of those beauties!!!

$96 dollars was a lot in 1957. A lot more than $1200 today.
ReplyDelete$1,095.95.
DeleteMSRP of a blued Super Blackhawk today is $1,079.
You can find them around $830 here new. I've been looking.
DeleteThat 2025 MSRP price was just for comparative purposes to the '57 MSRP price of $96.
DeleteGrips are too small for a full factory load 44 mag. Change it out for a large 1972 brass frame and it's good to go.

ReplyDeleteI bought a 44 Special Bisley last fall. It's become one of my favorites. 5 stars, do like, do recommend.

DeleteNow that's funny.. I can buy a blackhawk for about 900 dollars today.
ReplyDeleteBoy did Bill think a lot of himself...

Sorry. Sticky keys, not awake yet.
DeleteI shall spank myself.
My Super Blackhawk in .44 mag is a real beaut. Four digit S/N. 70xx
DeleteAccurate too, a real pleasure.

Rick-
DeleteIf your .44 is a flattop, it's an Old Model Blackhawk made in 1958.

If it is indeed a Super Blackhawk, it's an Old Model Super Blackhawk, made in '61 or '62.

Both pre-'68 revolvers had 7000 S/Ns at different times.
