A little work and it could be back in business

The Hungry Valentine Diner in Estelline, Texas. Buy this photo at Imagekind! This diner was made in the 1950s by the Valentine Diner Manufacturing Company of Kansas: www.kshs.org/diners/index.htm

  1. I never heard of "factory-built" (prefab) buildings from the 1950's.

  3. In a town of less than 200 people, the food has to be good. Little north Texas town on the Red River near Amarillo.

  4. Rib joint. Open Thursday thru Sat nights, 1pm to 1am, walk up take out only. Schedule like that gives you time to prep everything, cause its a mom and pop, plus a day off to re-coup. Simple menu, large manly mam helpings, (charge good for it), peach cobbler, grilled sausage, ribs, brisket, half and whole chickens, a few sides plus fries, pop in cans. KISS type eatery, simple stock pre-ordering. In good location might be a line down the sidewalk at least Saturday night. That'd be my battle plan, ready to retire, sell for handsome price cause its proven business.

  5. Estelline has a very bad reputation though, as a corrupt city-cop, speedtrap revenue kind of town. The Rangers know it very well.

  6. Ex truck driver here. Speedtrap is exactly right. Prick cop sits in his Mustang, and you better be under the limit to be safe. Cheesy place, I wouldn't drop a dime in the town, even if it was the best BBQ around. The Big Texan is just up the road in Amarillo, and worth the wait!

  7. There used to be a small, breakfast/lunch diner on the road to camp that we'd frequent. It closed because a newer larger place opened about a mile up the road. I have to admit that the breakfast at the new place is better. The homemade corned beef hash is superb. The downside is that there's no counter seating at the new place.

  8. Getting it open isn't the problem.
Getting enough traffic to keep it open is the problem.

  10. Sears built mail order houses in the 50's of porcelain panels. There was one still existing near I-40 about 2 miles from where I'm sitting in Knoxville TN until about 20 years ago.
