American Kestrel

  1. They like to stand on fenceposts near open fields and wait for lunch to pop up.

One day when I was riding fence line at the ranch there was a Kestrel on a post and as I approached he took off, flew 5 or 6 posts down and then lit again. As I putted closer to him he'd let me get about two posts away and then he'd take off again. We played this game for about a quarter of a mile until he got tired of my B.S. and circled back around me and landed on a post near the first one I'd seen him on.

Those vertical dark stripes make then easy to identify in the field.

    1. They're a small falcon and can be found in the entire lower 48 states.
