A Gem Rediscovered

Back in my early twenties, I discovered the existence of the South Warner Wilderness in far north eastern California.

At some point back in those years I must have ordered this map to plan a trip.  I never made it, although I did manage to organize a trip the the Caribou Peaks Wilderness just east of Lassen.

I must have stashed this map back then, and in the process of moving, it came out of hiding and rose front and center to my attention.

Now I've got the fever again!

A low quality but still useful map.  Can't complain, it was free.

Who wouldn't want to wander this country?

Just a classic high desert, basin and range creek.  Dinner on the fin awaits.

Oh yeah.

Just gorgeous.  I have neither the time nor the stamina to do a trip now, but perhaps by this fall?

Planning intensifies....

  1. Keep a sharp eye out for bigfoot, that's part of their home land.

  2. OMG! This looks amazing. Definitely off the beaten path. Also, CW, you may want to consider exploring the Trinity Alps, to the northwest of Redding. Very beautiful and not many people go there.

  3. Haven't been to South Warner, but I can testify that the countryside around Alturas sure is pretty.

Trinity Alps are nice. I spent a week in the Marble Mountain Wilderness with friends years ago. Highly recommended

  5. I used to live in Reno and would go up to visit my family up in Oregon and my wife and I would go up 395 and camp out up in the foot hills up around Likely and Alturis and the Warner Wilderness and stay for a few days then go see family and then couldn't wait to go back and camp some more.

  6. I just wanted to say if Northern Calif ever broke away from the other end I would move back there to this area, I loved camping and visiting that whole area up to the Oregon border.
