And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
One of the regulars at happy hour was an elderly German gentleman. He sat quietly at the end of the bar, had two glasses of red wine, then got up and left us with a pleasant nod. One day I recounted the story above and Alex broke out in unaccustomed boisterous laughter. Turned out he had worked on the Bf 109 at the factory in Regensburg. Nice guy. He really got a kick out of that story.
