And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
You post these injun portraits, CW, and I enjoy them, but they make me wonder what these injun folks looked like in their work clothes. I've got pictures from before the 1900s of injuns that worked on the ranches over in the Smoke Creek and they really looked like dark cowboys.
I don't know enough to say for sure, but I suspect that when they had these guys into the studio for portraits, they gave them peace pipes and Sioux style head dresses, because that's what people would expect to see. A lot of those pictures I don't post. This guy seems legit, but I can't say I truly know. Certainly, they wouldn't wear their best clothing when doing ranch work. Regular clothes would be far cheaper and more practical.
