Major Frederick Russell Burnham in London on the day he received from King Edward VII the cross of the Distinguished Service Order for his heroism during the March to Pretoria during the Second Boer War. Burnham’s two other medals shown in photo: the Queen’s South Africa Medal with four bars, Johannesburg, Paardeberg, Cape Colony, and the British South Africa Company Medal, earned in the First Matabele War. The black armband was worn in mourning for Queen Victoria.
