And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
An excellent read on this warrior is "Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History" by S.C.Gwynne.
Cynthia Ann Parker's son made a good chief, but the fact is that the Commanches were doomed long before Quanah was conceived. The fact that he was half-white gave him street creds in negotiating the Commanche surrender with both the Army, the Texans and the Commanche. But all in all, it was a sad story.
Well, surrender, or survival. I'd say he and the tribe made the best of what was a tough situation. Nowadays if you can say you have Indian blood ( for me, I've got Choctaw in the family, and the wife claims some Cherokee), your cooler than the average cat.
I am a comanche tribal member and yes it is a good read because when i was a child my great grandmother never told me anything about quanah parker, however she did teach me to speak the language.

DeleteI have a bit of Creek in me. And yes, they made the best of an impossible situation: The end of life as they knew it.
DeleteCreek - so you are probably no fan of Andrew Jackson.
