Nesptah was a powerful priest, mayor of Thebes and governor of Upper Egypt – and his family’s great wealth allowed him to order a lavish sarcophagus.

Nesptah’s father Mentuemhat was the most powerful man in Upper Egypt at the time, and negotiated successfully with a slew of Egypt’s enemies including the Kushites and Assyrians.
