Its great for static defense, large concentrated movement defense, its at the very small unit movement where the most critical defensive systems remain most important. A possible back packable sized unit, say one, or two, if it can be made light enough, wich can be deployed rapidly, say dismount from its carrier and plopped on the ground, pull a rip cord or button and let her rip. With the present light weight battery packs today, with fast change like for battery hand tools, its readily feasible. Regardless, just taking the SPO in 404 as a prime example, something absolutely has to be developed to protect small unit infantry. No doubts about it, it should be right now and from the beginning single the most important thing, and due to the reliance on drones to attack single soldiers, if a reasonable weappn can be found effective, totally change the battlefield fron what it presently is, like big time, this may be the perfect situation for an AI brain powered weapon, along with very high rate slew and elevation control, you got effective defense. details such as the man pack frame stays connected to the weapon, and the solder only needs to hit a control, a bi-pod deploys, he sits down and pulls his quick release shoulder straps, even have the weapon live and detecting targets while the solder is moving so its ready soon as its on the ground. Think of it like how a belt fed gunner typically operates, everyone carries extra reloads, say in a quick change cassette type mag, keeping to the KISS principles of individual manned combat systems.

In Vietnam, the Army had a truck-mounted "Quad 50" that was originally introduced as an anti-aircraft weapon but in an ambush or on the perimeter, they kicked ass and took names on the enemy.
Kinda clever but being shotgun based limits the range to 50 to 75 yards max. Shotgun pellets are little spheres and there is a physical limit as to just how fast you can throw a sphere, therreby severely limiting the range. A drone could easily hover above out of range and drop whatever to destroy this toy.
what I don't understand is why don't they look to the past. you know WW2 when they made VT fuses to deal with air attacks. I think they made them for 40mm even not sure about it. but I know they made a bunch for the 5 inch guns and fired them like mad at the planes coming to crash on the decks. if they worked on planes, shouldn't they work on drones as well. a VT fuse is what a few hundred bucks VS a million dollar missile ? or let me guess, the MIC doesn't want to make VT fuses anymore. just million dollar missiles ?
Looks like another contract we don't need to pay for. They have designed every round of artillery and the fuses for them to carry a payload and detonate almost on command. What happened to all the flechette rounds? How about an arty round that detonates in the sky that kicks off the butt plate and spreads open a net 30-60 ft wide? Drones will be used to track our every move before long.
And I still only broke a 98 on the trap range.
