The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? It doesn't have to be this way. Art that shows the works of man, the work itself, can be amazing. One example I think is the art von Braun commissioned to show possible space technology he was hoping we'd develop. Norman Rockwell was a good artist who dealt with worldly subjects.
One of the things I think about most often when I see beautiful works such as this or wonderful old architecture in general is that I doubt we would be capable of doing it today. The skills are lost, are they not? Or has just the interest been lost? People would have to look up from their phones to see this....but then they would do a 'selfie'. CW once featured the Library of Parliament here in Ottawa. I doubt we could build that again. (the interior is currently under renovation) Steve_in_Ottawa
We have not lost the ability to create such works. We know the materials and techniques. What has changed is our value of time. That ceiling was most likely painted over a period of years. Very few artists are going to dedicate that amount of time to such a project. “Artificial Intelligence” can design that mural in milliseconds and techniques are available to “print” it in situ. Modern societies want it fast and efficiently.
The best reno for the house of parliament in Ottawa is to throw every liberal from the rooftop and enjoy the spatter on the bricks below, and never let a Libturd be the ruling party ever again. Bring back Harper!!!
This is why I travel to Europe,, to see all the loveliness in the cathedrals, churches, museums, and lovely old buildings. In Copenhagen right now. The old architecture is delightful. Lubeck, Germany was fabulous.
Hey Skip, I don’t know if you count Marc Chagall in with the impressionists, or if you consider his work to be more cubist or modernist, but I love his art. Indeed the very vagueness of a typical impressionist work is probably justification for your feelings about it. I have often struggled to see what the artist is trying to convey in his or her work, be it painting, sculpture, or other. Sometimes I succeed, I feel, and other times, I’m not sure the payoff is worth it. I have tried to no avail to understand Jackson Pollock’s work, for instance. In the end, if art moves us in some way, it’s probably successful.
Rob Muir, I wish I could remember the video I saw 20 or 30 years ago about Pollock's works. Maybe CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt? They were far from random paint spatters. There is an elegance about them. Steve_in_Ottawa

ReplyDeleteThis is why I live in Europe. After being stationed in Germany back in the 80's I decided to stay here. No regrets on that decision.
