  8. This image shows the aftermath of a massive sinkhole that occurred in December 2001 in Waihi, New Zealand.

    Cause:
    The hole was created by the collapse of an old, abandoned mine shaft.

    Impact:
    A house on the property collapsed into the sinkhole.

    Location:
    Waihi is a town known for its history of gold mining, which has left numerous abandoned workings in the area.
