And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Captain Edward J. Smith on the boat deck of the RMS Titanic with the shipbuilder who was instrumental in the ship's design, Lord William Pirrie, on April 4, 1912.
His company designed and built the monster ship. The design was revolutionary and guaranteed to never sink. It sank. I am no lawyer, but I'd say that it was his company's fault. It's kind of like the cigarette industry and cancer.
A captain is always resposible, if his or her ship collides with something. Ex: USS Harry Truman, 2 months ago. Great novels like "The Caine Mutiny" were written about the principle.
Those are a couple of nice looking chaps. It just shows to go you, when things are going well, they're going well. When they crash they crash. Who knows what's around the next corner? Human error will never go away. When you try great things, you take great risks. I'm thankful for those who do.
This British "Lord" conveniently got sick and missed the maiden voyage. It's a shame that he was not reduced in "rank" after the disaster.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't run into the iceberg.
DeleteWhy? It wasn't his fault the captain chose to proceed at speed in ice filled water.
DeleteConvenient. There’s far more to this story.

DeleteWell we know who here takes responsibility for their work.
Delete"...guaranteed to never sink..."
DeleteProve he said that.
Or live with your gullibility.
There has never been proof cigarettes cause cancer.
More gullibility.

DeleteFinally the king of snark expresses a germ of Truth.
Dan Kurt
say bill, shouldn't the bulkheads go all the way to the deck? Nah, it will be ok.
ReplyDeleteThat photo didn’t age too well - Huh?
ReplyDeleteRemember, it was working perfectly when it left Belfast. After they gave it to an Englishman, however......
