USS Richard B. Russell (SSN-687) the Navy's first ship to bear the name, was the last of the "STURGEON" class attack submarines built.

  4. I read the Wiki article (FWIW) and apparently the Russell was used as a special projects sub, which ended up prototyping and testing some capabilities later used operationally on boats like the Parche, and probably newer boats.

  5. Followed by the 688 class nuke fast attack, later replaced by sea wolf class I think- the SSBN boomers started with the 726 boat
