And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
My grandpa (Arnt Thompson) arrived in Utah from Norway in the 1920s at about age 30 or so. He met another Norwegian named Alf Engen at one point, probably in the 30s. When Alf was scoping out ski hills in Little Cottonwood canyon, they would sometimes race avalanches down hill. Amazing that they both lived. Grandpa went back to mining and carpentry. Alf went on to be a big shot at Alta and other major resorts.
