And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
For a few years somebody flew one on a cargo route to Marthas Vineyard, great looking plane, wonderful radial engine sound. Believe they where mostly shipping seafood, which makes sense, high dollar valuable cash cargo.
My dad worked on and flew on those with the 434th Troop Carrier Wing at Bakalar AFB, Columbus, Indiana way back in early 1960s. I was pretty small then, but I remember going to visit them on base open houses. Pretty cool plane.
I remember seeing those flying out of Pittsburgh International with the 911th Troop Carrier Group when I was a kid.

ReplyDeleteAlso known ac the C-119. I got 5 jumps out of one in 1968
ReplyDeleteI went to jump school too late for the C-119, mine was 130s and 141s. I did get a C-7 Caribou jump and a bunch of rotary wing jumps before I retired.
DeleteBenning College of Gravity - 1970 - 4 C-119 jumps, 2 on each side of a C-141 - what a sandwich.
DeleteUsed in the film "The Flight of the Phoenix". The remake used the same plane.
ReplyDeleteFlyin' coffin
ReplyDeleteMy dad flew on one of those when he was in the Army in 1956. He never set foot on another airplane again.
