  1. Several years ago I could go up a sailboat mast to fix the light or whatever, then the rope slipped & dropped me 10ft. Never got the nerve again to go back up.

    1. It's not the fall that kills you. It's the sudden stop.

    2. You are wrong... I spent 6 years as an iron worker... I know guys like this... lived with them, drank with them, laughed and cried with them.... best men i ever met or knew... they do not care what anyone thinks about if they do this or not...its a different breed of man..

    3. It's atop the spire of this building that the above photo was taken:

  4. No. I don't care if they're wearing safety harnesses. No. Just no.

  6. Saw a video of the construction of the arch in St. Louis. Oh no way! No OSHA in those days.

    1. Really?... did you write that using a phone serviced and connected by structures men like this built???
I've met timid guys who think that as well... I forget their names...

    2. The men that help to build America are anything but stupid.

    3. I admire people with this sort of guts and talent

    4. Perhaps reckless is more appropriate - to climb the spire just for a photo is reckless, to work on the spire using appropriate harness and safety gear is just admirable.

    5. They didn't climb it for a picture; they're installing the sections of that spire to completion. I suppose they wanted a picture to show their grandchildren.
      I can't say as I blame them.

    6. ELMO: Pull your condescending head out of your butt. Anyone stupid enough to stand on the tip of a skyscraper and pose for a photo op is insane.

    7. Why Johnny! What an ugly thing to say. Does this mean we're not friends anymore?
You know Johnny, if I thought you weren't my friend... I just don't think I could bear it!

  8. Short of posing for this picture, what sort of work requires 5 guys on, what, 15 sqfeet?

FWIW, I have no doubt that there are those who are willing to work these types of jobs. I hope that they're paid handsomely. How much money would it take for me to work such a job? Add up all the money everywhere, and that number still isn't large enough.

how many people does it take to line up a few holes and turn some bolts?
      one, maybe 2.
5 will get in each others way in such a confined area.

  11. Showboating or pride in ones work. Notice the five pairs of work boots visible, well worn boots. I might not take six guys to bolt a section together, But I am guessing you have never worked at height either and this is miles ahead of putting together an IKEA table
