And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Voice Coach/Opera Singer REACTION & ANALYSIS Disturbed "The Sound of Silence"
I almost didn’t watch it. Figured it would be boring. Watching this lady’s expressions and listening to her critique was, for me, fascinating. I was pleasantly surprised, entertained, and realized how little I know about voice. As always, your mileage may vary.
Roger that! I discovered her a few weeks ago. She reacts to and analyzes old rock and just an eclectic assortment of music. Listening to her take apart an old Moody Blues, Eagles or Pink Floyd song helps me to appreciate them anew. She knows the name of every way to make a voice sound and how to do it, a new area of awareness for me.
Most "reaction" videos are just people clowning for the camera. This one and a few others actually analyze the song and the singers and explain what's being done vocally. Makes it much more interesting, in my opinion.
Jennifer Glatzhofer and Julia Nilon are two others that I've enjoyed watching.
Elizabeth is a terrific singer in her own right - search for her singing a difficult aria in a prestigious opera competition a few years ago. Her analyses of so many songs is a fascinating window into how we humans produce such a wide range of vocalizations- plus she's into all types of music - her episodes on heavy metal bands like Nightwish and Disturbed (I know, the latter is not really heavy metal) are pretty cool. And her being so cute and expressive is a bonus.
excellent video, excellent choice of songs to cover, and to analyze this cover of that classic, and to hear her discussion of it... superb choice of content to post! Thank you!
There is another voice coach/singer (European) who does reaction videos to songs and really goes into depth on all the ins-and-outs. The Charismatic Voice gives not quite as much info, but her ratio of listening to reacting is better for me, and is less dry.
This is my own rendition from long ago in a galaxy far, far away before a variety of physical debilitations resulted in me being in a state veterans home "WAITING FOR GOD" (i.e., a delightful British comedy series!), no longer able to use my hands for strumming guitar.

"THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE"
Composed by: PAUL SIMON
Hello darkness, my old friend. I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping, And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sounds of silence.
In restless dreams, I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone. 'Neath the halo of a streetlamp, I turned my collar to the cold and damp, When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sounds of silence.
In the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more; People talking without speaking, People hearing without listening, People writing songs that voices never share. No one dare Disturb the sounds of silence.
"Fools", said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows. Hear my words that I might teach you. Take my arms that I might reach you." But, my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made, And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming, And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls, And whispered in the sounds of silence."
Elizabeth has covered vocalists from Linda Ronstadt and Karen Carpenter to Will Ramos and Melissa Bonny. She has covered classic rock band like CCR and The Doors to current heavy metal bands like Lacuna Coil and Lorna Shore. She also has started scientific research (through donations) into harsh vocals and weather or not people are harming their voice. Her youtube channel is called the Charismatic Voice if anyone is interested. She has new videos three times a week.
Elizabeth is the best of a small group of knowledgeable reactors. I gave some money for her harsh vocal research she is doing with several metal singers (and is there anything cuter than her friendship with Will Ramos of Lorna Shore?) Her, Julia Nilon (just coming back after concentrating on her thesis), Charlie Colotta, for voice stuff, Nick Higgs is getting there. Eric Clark for less technical/radio oriented stuff. Doug Helvering for composition. Some of the other "voice coach" reactors are good too, and a few of the pure "entertainment" reactors are worth a bother. Others you just want to slap.

ReplyDeleteWoh. Outstanding voice. I think this is a far better version than the original. It is so full, very rich, the emotional content is thru the roof.
ReplyDeleteWhen I heard this years ago, I threw up in my mouth. Better than the original? No. Just no.
ReplyDeleteHer listening to "25 or 6 to 4" is really a stitch. Fun, plus gave me fresh insight into a song I've heard countless times.

Wow. Just... wow.
Deletesee her take on "The dark side of the Moon."
ReplyDeleteI've heard this version of Sounds of Silence before and just can't bear to hear this drama queen bellow it out again. She is cute though.
