    Big Fire - Stay Cold
Either way, scent of a fire helps keep uninvited guests away - unless you cooked bacon!

  2. Seems like an awful lot of work to build for the amount of weather protection you get

  3. well, if he built a wall behind the fire to direct the heat towards him.
that what I used to do many years ago in the army. and it doesn't take all that long to make a shelter like that if you know what you doing either.
and the difference is huge too in staying warm. he up and off the ground for one thing- no cold sleeping bag. he can sit on the edge and cook/heat something to eat and drink. the biggest problem is getting out of the wind.
wind chill can kill you fast in that weather. this is when you find out what gear works and what does not. as my dad taught me many years ago, the most important bit is the 6 inches between your ears- think !
