More Aspens/East Side of the Sierra

Basque food at JT's in Gardnerville, Nevada is tradition going back decades.

Yes, those are dollars pinned to the ceiling.  Don't leave without trying a Picon Punch.

The star of the show - aspens!

    1. It totally grows on you. The smell of sage, secret springs, the rattling of aspens, the emptiness, the little Nevada towns, the long stretches of road going on and on - it's a unique and magical way of life.

    2. You reminded me of Cache Creek in British Columbia. I worked out of there a long time ago and I always remember the scent of the sage and that "rattling wind". Steve_in_Ottawa

  3. Stuck here in the West Africa, hearing the rain pound on the tin roof, pictures from home make for a refreshing interlude. Thanks.

  4. Two thoughts- Monitor Pass is the prettiest pass in the Sierra. Especially in October.

When I went to JT's website and checked their location map it made me wonder: Is Sharkey's Casino still in business on the same block of Gardnerville? So I zoomed the map out and there it was.
Sharkey's: A completely unique gambling and dining experience. And not in a particularly good way.
Imagine if Ma and Pa Kettle ran a casino.

  5. I was totally surprised to see JT's. Last time I stopped in was back in '92. My former gf was close friends with one of the daughters whose family owned the place. Nice people, great food. Gardnerville is one of those places I would move to in a heart beat if I was rich and wanted to get away from the world.

    1. '92 was about the last time I passed through Gardnerville and its grown incredibly since then. Google Earth shows where it was once nothing but open fields and alfalfa farms south of town is now urban sprawl. It's an amazing difference.
