Weird

  1. I had a Type 4 (411) once, not bad cars really, sadly, it rusted out from underneath me. But I sold the engine to a guy who used in an old 356.

  3. Learned to drive on the two door version. Good little car the folks brought back from a stint in Germany. H/O four cylinder gave you trunk in front, and trunk in back. The fuel injection and disc brakes in front were pretty upscale at the time.

  4. My dad's first cousin drove these things and swore up and down by them. He swore a lot, actually, but he sure loved VWs.

  5. Used to see these around all the time. Not so weird.

  6. It looks like a 412, but I'm not sure if that is what it actually is. I had a 411 wagon in 1979 (the 412's younger brother). Fuel injection, automatic, and A/C. Very nice car.

  7. My mom had a 411 for a bit in the 70s. It swapped ends on her a short bit from the house going downhill in the snow.

Walked home and handed my dad the keys.

  8. Brazilian built VW that used the late Brooks Stevens motifs on a Type-3 scale.

Pay attention to the front edge of the "front hood" (frunk or some such in current talk). On the German 412 TL models this panel extends to the front of the car and curls downward. On the Brazilian the opening is picture-framed a the font valance panel.

Another cue is the German 412's have a gas filler flap over the front righthand wheel, whereas Brazil had the fillers elsewhere.

  9. Cover up from seeing the top and it looks like the headlights are on the wrong end.

  10. A buddy had a VW Thing (181) back in the early 70's. Take off the doors and ride around town. Now that was weird.

    1. And today, vw things are stupid expensive. I didn't get them when I was young, still don't get them today.

That said, you won't be passing yourself every time you turn around.
