Fun with Foam - Thanks Al!

  1. I read once that a major difference between the fire controls of Japanese and American ships, especially carriers, in WWII was that when an attack began, Americans drained fuel lines and filled them with foam, thus reducing the fire hazard. The Japanese did not, and their carriers burned like torches. Lucky for us.

  3. had a hangar at altus afb with a deluge fire suppression system; 5mil gallon water tank that could empty into the hangar(which could hold four c-5a aircraft) in sixty seconds. the floor drains where huge and all led to a pond which had a foam dispensing unit at the edge. it was water not foam. designed in the 1950s. the water was to flush fuels into the drains. thermopneumatic heat sensors. very delicate and finicky system.. had warning horns which blew for thirty seconds and if you did not get gone or hit the e-stop, you could be drowned.
