File this one under "Smart Diplomacy."

US officially "Takes No Position" on China's provocative actions in the disputed waters of the South China Sea.

In a somewhat stunningly hypocritical step for a nation that seems so hell-bent on proclaiming Russia's provactive actions as tantamount to World War over Ukraine, the White House has issued a statement "taking no position" on China's "disputes" in the China Seas...
  • *BIDEN MEETS CHINESE ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF FANG AT WHITE HOUSE
  • *BIDEN SAYS U.S. TAKES NO POSITION ON TERRITORY CLAIMS AT ISSUE
  • *BIDEN SAYS NATIONS SHOULD AVOID PROVOCATIVE STEPS IN DISPUTES
So - the Chinese undertook "provacative actions" into the "disputed territory" of another sovereign (allied) nation... and the US retaliates with no sanctions, no damnation, no hellfire? Good to know who your friends are.
The Vietnamese, Philippines, and Japan will certainly take notice, and more ominously, the Red Chinese will as well.  This is simply a repeat of the actions just before WWII where the allies attempted to appease Hitler by being non confrontational and conciliatory, but instead encouraged him to greater acts of aggression.
The exact same scenario is playing out here, with China as a resurgent Nazi Germany, and the aforementioned asian nations starring as Czechoslovakia, Poland and France.  Reminds me of that old saying about the fate of those who do not learn from history.
What will Obama do when the Chinese actually resort to violence to maintain their conquests?  The message here is that we will do nothing, and it is sent clearly to friend and foe alike.  This cannot and will not end well.

    1. Two thoughts.

First, we have agreements with some of these countries to help defend them against attack, so whether we should or should not has already been decided.

Second, there is always a tension between the question of when our national interests become so important that we need to up and fight, and when they aren't. We tried ignoring foreign development as long as possible before both WWI and WWII, but eventually we ended up fully involved. Should we intervene early, and invest a minimum of blood and treasure, in an effort to deter the sorts of conflict that may well blow out of control if ignored? Or should we gamble and trust that most of them will burn out before they blow up? No one knows, but history suggests that with the Chinese and their attitudes, we will end up involved eventually, even if we don't want to be.

Our "Pax Americana," as they call it, has come to an end under this president, and our country will have to make some hard decisions on foreign involvements in the years to come, but without a sense of historical perspective, which this administration does not have, I fear that even little conflicts will be allowed to become very dangerous ones.

    1. Oh I'm not disagreeing with you, just pointing out that it might not be quite as simple as letting them fight their own wars. Sooner or later, history tells us they tend to become our wars whether we want them to or not.

If we insisted that our leaders and their kin were honor bound to fight any war they wanted to be involved in personally and in the front lines, there might not be quite so much interest in foreign adventures.

Did you see that John McCain wanted us to send in the special forces to fight in Nigeria? A great example of a guy who learned nothing from his experiences in Vietnam.

  3. Reminds me of the American Ambassador to Kuwait telling Saddam that America had no position WRT his plans to invade that small country. I believe she called it a batter for the two of them to settle themselves.

  4. back in the eighties our bases in the phillipines came up for renewal and they tried to jack us up on the price to rent bases we built to protect the phils and reagen said kiss our butts.then the Japanese wanted us out of Okinawa an island we paid dearly to conquer and so weve been moving our troops to gaum at great expense and gaumanians are not happy about either.so I say when these folks start spending more on their own defence and I mean at least as much as we are spending defending them I say they can kiss our butts. your contery friend truckwilkins

  5. They are all tussling over the sea and resources we don't even bother to exploit off our own shores. If they all want to play the Great Game they need to step up to the plate fully ready to play and not come whining to us after they decided they had better things to spend money and resources on over the last 50 years than building a decent navy to protect what they view as theirs. When it comes to allies, I didn't see any of these "allies" even try to support this country over the last 50 years. Vietnam was an enemy. Japan was an enemy. Philippines kicked us to the curb decades ago and decided they didn't need Americans anymore.

I'm OK with that. There's not a single reef or sea washed rock out there worth a single American life. By some curious reason, anybody who extracts the resources will sell them to us in accordance with ancient economic principles that almost anybody understands.
