Ball turret on a B-24J Liberator

It's long, but a fascinating view of the retractable ball turret on the belly of a B-24J Liberator, flying out of Stockton, California.

That last scene shows the Liberator landing at the Stockton Municipal Airport, and the road below glimpsed momentarily as it lands is Highway 99 going north/south.

  1. More than one poor sob was stuck in that beast when it wouldn't retract back into the fuselage during WW2 and it made for a messy landing and the gunner ended up as a smear . Of all the places on the aircraft, this turret was best armored, but I'd personally rather take my chances elsewhere.

    1. So, there was no way for them to exit upwards into the airplane, only down?

      Wow, a virtual perfect landing.
