And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Dorothea Lange's North Carolina country store found.
July 1939. Gordonton, N.C. "Country store on dirt road. Sunday afternoon. Note kerosene pump on the right and the gasoline pump on the left. Rough, unfinished timber posts have been used as supports for porch roof. Negro men sitting on the porch. Brother of store owner stands in doorway." 4x5 nitrate negative by Dorothea Lange for the Farm Security Administration. =========== I have posted this one before, but haven't seen the present day photograph. Fascinating. Need to go and check it out. Thanks. By the way, I have similar memories.
The photographer?

Thanks, Brock, that's a great description.
DeleteInteresting photo - the stones holding up the porch are still there. Would love to have that old gas pump and the tin signs!
ReplyDeleteNo kidding! Someone no doubt sold all that for a pretty penny.
DeleteI read last night that the man's nephew owns it and has trying to get funds for restoration.

DeleteThere is one still standing not far from Tarboro.
