What's out there in the dark?

I went down to the barn a week ago to turn out a light I'd left on, and found this guy basking in the glow.

Quite a furry fellow, and surprisingly colorful for a moth.  He could hold his own with the butterflies in a contest for the flashiest wings.

Thanks to commenter Jon Spencer, we now can ID this character as a Tiger Moth!

    1. I have no idea. I was just surprised at how colorful he/she was, given how drab moths usually are. But then, gypsies are colorful, so that's probably what he/she is.

  4. Boom! The very first entry on the website Jon recommended was this moth, which I now know to call a Tiger Moth! Thanks very much, Jon, I'm now better informed than I was. Much appreciated.
