    1. As opposed to cowboys wearing sombreros? AFAIK, western hat styles originated with the Mexican herders and wranglers and got adapted as cowboys adopted them.

    2. Imagine you're a member of one of the North American Indian tribes. For twenty thousand years or so, since the end of the last ice age, your people have been living in the Stone Age wearing animal skins at best. Suddenly another tribe shows up out of nowhere and they have woven clothes and things like hats, in multiple colors and sizes. Wowser! Yeah, they will be wearing what they think looks good, and is miles and miles better than what they were doing. I'm guessing those guys are wearing the new fangled clothes in a style that could be called the "Ute tribal dude" look. Babes probably dug it. They were stylin'!
