The brown cylinder is a tube, probably made of bakelite, that carries the ignition leads from the magneto, which is in the driver's compartment to the cylinders. The black shaft behind the cylinder head is connected to the camshaft to drive the magneto, which is adjusted manually by the driver to advance or retard the ignition timing. The lockwire is there because the supercharged straight eight is bolted to the frame so everything vibrates and self-locking nuts hadn't been invented yet. It's probably a Bugatti Type 35. It looks like the spark plug wires are contained in the brown cylinder but where the distributor is located I can't even guess. And what is the function of the belt driven sheave on the firewall? I'd love to see that up close and in person as well as what car it's in. A straight 8 with a supercharger. Wow.
Those are really good questions. Since the ignition system should be in sync with the camshaft it appears that there’s a coupling between the aft end of the camshaft (this is an overhead cam engine) and the magneto+distributor.
