And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
In the early 1980s, I often walked along the empty stretch of beach between Melbourne and Sebastian Inlet. There were three houses with dogs scattered along the three miles or so I walked. As I walked, one dog would join me, a few minutes later another would join us, and finally the third. We four would walk and play for a while and then go back the way we had come. One by one, those dogs peeled off at their houses until I finished walking alone.
