That's Ridiculous!

  1. XF-85 Goblin parasite fighter. There's good film of it trying to hook on to a B-36 with not very good results. Eventually able to but not something that was practical.

    1. That's just silly. One, the XF-85 was manned. Two, unmanned, radio controlled aircraft were used on WWII by Japan, U.S., and Germany. Three, mating fixed wing aircraft to larger aircraft, or to dirigibles dates to before WWI.

    2. The Kettering Bug was used during WW I. If anyone is interested, you can view it at the Air Force Museum.

RF-84s were stable under the B-36 and worked well.

  3. Specs say it had a one hour and twenty minute endurance and could do 650 mph so actually quite the feat of engineering.

  4. One of a number of Tests of "Parasite Fighters" for long-range Bombers. One attempt used a B-29 and F-84's with Wingtip-to-Wingtip Locks. Did Not end well.
Another Concept Study had a 1,500-Ton, Nuclear-Powered Bomber with Fighters in Cradles on top of the wings
