And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
The first thing I did was taught my two sons was to drive a manual. Both have manual cars now and they will never get stolen as most people cannot drive them.
I have only owned manual shift vehicles that is, until recently. I wanted a newer Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with a six-banger engine and a six-speed manual. They are virtually impossible to find. There were two available, but they are both on the East Coast and it would have been around $2,000 to ship either of them to Colorado. I ended up with my very first automatic. It's OK but I find myself reaching for the stick shift to downshift instead of breaking.
Went to buy a new car in 2018. Our choice was a Mazda 3 with a manial transmission. On our way to test drive, I found out the salesman, about 25 years old, couldn't drive the car he was trying to sell us! As a 55 year old woman, I said "Let me show you!" Zoom-zoom!
My ugly, 5 speed, '86 Toyota pickup, will likely not get stolen, since I moved away from Mexicanville, San Diego. It was near the top of the list for Baja bound for looty booty.
I went to buy a new truck after the Camp Fire. I insisted on a manual transmission. The salesman worked to get me to upgrade to the fancier models but I told him that if it doesn't have a manual transmission, I'm not buying. It ended up being the last year they were offered. Damn nice truck.

ReplyDeleteBeen driving (legally) for 45 years and at least 90% was with a stick.
ReplyDeleteYou're naturally, and mandatorily in better control of your ride when it has a stick and you're therefore a safer and better driver.
