Bunkhouse cabin in the Highwood Mountains, Montana.
Known as the Shonkin Cowcamp, this cabin has sheltered cowboys and salters for every annual roundup since it began in 1913.
That's a well maintained cabin. Here in California, there are a surprising number of cabins about like this in ruins, scattered here and there, because no one maintained them, and the winters can be tough.
Up in the Marbles once me and two buddies sheltered in one that still had half its roof when we were caught on the trail by a snow storm. It was still surprisingly snug for missing its door and about 50% of its old shake roof. We really appreciated finding it just then.
It looks well put together, chinked logs, metal roof, brick chimney. Cozy!
ReplyDeleteMy female cousin L. built her home NW or Reno in the mountains around the remains of one such cabin that had a fire and then was abandoned. You can still see the smoke damage on some of the big beams. She kept it true to form and what surrounds it now, just fits. We take Dad there every year for a couple weeks.
