    1. Aye, in my youth I certainly would have done this for free.

  2. When I was in the old Republic of Viet Nam, I watched five man Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (i.e., "LRRP", pronounced as "LERP") teams from "L" Company, 75th Infantry Regiment (Airborne Ranger) using that method with a UH-1D "Iroquois" helicopter to break off contact with North Vietnamese Army (i.e., "NVA") units and evacuate the Area of Operation.

Just watching those guys do that was enough to scare the liver right out of me!

In case anyone reading this doesn't already know, the primary mission of a five man LRRP team is limited to "RECONNAISSANCE", which means their purpose is to obtain information, while remaining undetected.

Therefore, any actual contact with numerically superior enemy forces would unnecessarily compromise their mission and possibly be foolishly suicidal.

However, in addition to performing long range reconnaissance patrols to obtain information, they also conduct ambushes, seize prisoners, and/or attack targets of opportunity, if warranted by the changing situation.
