And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, Quebec City, Canada
We did. Lots of them. Go to just about any tourist destination and we'll put our great hotels agains't yours any day. Start with the lodge at Yellowstone.
Actually in Montreal it's called "joual". My mother was taught by nuns in Montreal and she told me that some of my father's relatives from the backwoods had such an accent and used such strange idioms that she almost needed an interpreter. The Chateau Frontenac was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1890s to get rich people to spend money on travel. The Banff Springs Hotel was the first, IIRC. Al_in_Ottawa
I spent Thanksgiving in Old Quebec city two years ago. It was as wonderful as I had pictured. The French food was excellent, and I overindulged with cassoulet and duck confit about twice a day. Incredible history there, as N. America's only fortified walled city north of Mexico. if you haven't been, I highly recommend.
My Mother was French-Canadian so I speak some of the local 'patois' that is spoken in these parts Ottawa-Hull (Gatineau). Strange to say that we were all taught 'Parisian French' in school that was somewhat in conflict with the local dialect. Then there was "The Plouffe Family". I always liked Onésime. CW, you may have opened up a whole new Pandora's Box. Steve_in_Ottawa
Yeah, beautiful place, just have to get past the snobbiness up there. Used to go up for a few days, great food, but lord they don't like us folks from NH.
That's some building!
ReplyDeleteLots of beauty is wasted on Canadians.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should ask yourself how come Americans can't do things this beautiful?

I love reading about so-called "French Canadians" visiting France and trying to communicate with the Frogs.
