And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
The webcam that got hosed was put,I'd expect, out of harms way. Or so they thought. IDK how far away the camera is that we are seeing it through, but if we're seeing what they are describing, that arc of liquid rock is just YUGE. And the triple fountain was happening in three places. I wonder how many tons of lava were being expelled per second. Cameras don't even come close to delivering what actually being there and seeing something is like, and even with that built in penalty, That is really something. I wonder how far it is to the nearest houses.
Based on the geotag on the photos the closest I got was at the Crater Rim Trail Trailhead. I estimate that the distance to the vent was about a mile. The ground was not shaking - unfortunately ;). I did take some photos a little farther away at the Steam Vents Trail and got a few shots of the lava spew through the steam. All of this was quite serendipitous as my wife and I were finishing lunch in Hilo when I checked the USGS site and saw that the eruption had just started. We drove up to the park and literally beat the crowds. When we left later that afternoon the line into the park was over 5mi long.
Awesome still @1:30! Just stunning.
ReplyDeleteIs this why there was a 7.5 in Japan earlier today?

ReplyDeleteI was there for eruption #25 in June. Single fountain 1500’ sounded like a freight train.
ReplyDeleteYou got an idea about how far you were from it? Was the ground shaking?

ReplyDeleteSeeing that going on makes me believe that humans are spreading bad things into the air just does not compute.
