  1. Interesting. Nice post.
I had a big stave silo like that on the farm I bought. I contacted some Amish guys I know who wanted a silo. They came over, dismantled it, and took it away. Even up.
When these are built, the staves are placed long end up in a circle and banded together with a steel band. Then they just put a row of staves on top of the previous row and build their way to the top and the dome is placed on. To take mine down, they first put a thick layer of sand around the base of the silo. Then they climed up the bands that held it together. They did this without ropes. Then they unscrew a ring and topple the staves individually from the top down. The staves would fall onto the sand so they wouldn't break. The fallen staves were picked up and stacked for loading on a flat bed. Each stave is about 3 inches thick and approximately 14 inches by 30 inches. I would guess they weigh about 50# each. They are made of cement. It took the guys two days.

  2. Wow, great story. Man, if I tried something like that without ropes, you could bet your bottom dollar that sooner of later I'd be joining the staves in that pile of sand.
